A Few Words About Flash

posted Jun 17, 2011 8:03 AM by Lee Sapara   [ updated Jun 17, 2011 8:31 AM ]

Whenever I talk about the iPad or iPhone with people, every once in awhile I hear someone complain that Flash isn't available on iOS devices, and that Apple sucks.  They immediately trash Apple for this?!?!  So I figured I would give some links on why Apple don't do this.  I think we should start asking out programers to use better environments than using Flash like HTML5 which is open and free for everyone to use and solves the sluggishness.

Here's the Down and Dirty of It
  • Flash Slows the device down, and needs a higher processing power than HTML5
  • as a result Drains the Devices Battery
  • Its expensive to use Adobe its a Closed System
  • Flash hasen't learned to Touch things right - Its designed for mouse and keyboard so the experience on touch devices are awkward anyway.
  • A Video Format called "H.264", is already viewable on iPhones, iPods and iPads.  Web publishers need to change how they Upload Video
  • It's also more likely to get a virus to attach on Flash

The thing I love about iPhone is that even when you just got your phone and your locked in on your contract with your provider.  Apple comes around and completely gives you a brand new operating system to make your phone new again.  And when I say new, I mean over 200 more features new!

Coming this Fall Apple will be releasing the iOS 5 operating system, that should be a free upgrade when you plug into your itunes.  It will probably be around this time that they will launch a new version of the phone as well.

Check out the Apple website on the iOS 5 for more info at http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/

3. Save very large image, by pass the 2M limit. No crash any more.

【For Those with Privacy Concern 】
Chrome will alert you that the extension may access all your data.
Here is the whole story.
1. We use chrome's NPAPI (Which has the ability to access some local data) to work around a Chrome issue http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=45395 which may crash the extension when you save a large ( >2M) screenshot. The new version also delivers a much better "Saving screenshot" experience. If you still concern about privacy, you can install a lite version we designed specially for you http://bit.ly/iY6qPz .

2. The plugin has the ability to access your data, but it never does it. It only access your screenshot data. Chrome shows the warning even if extensions do not access any private data. We are also normal internet users like you, we hate the bad behaviour. We also believe in "Don't be evil".

【Notice】
  1. Awesome screenshot can't be installed in Chromebook ( CR-48) because it uses NPAPI which doesn't supported in ChromeBook. However, we designed a special version for Chromebook http://bit.ly/iY6qPz .
 2. Due to Chrome's screenshot API, it can't get the screenshot of Flash.
 3. If you can't find awesome screenshot icon in your browser, please re-enable it here chrome://extensions/ .
